Dostal Alley was established in 1991 as one of the first Casinos in Central City after the passaged of a constitutional amendment that legalized gambling in three Colorado towns. We are a small family owned and operated business located on the corner of Main and Gregory St.
Dostal Alley was one of the first eight casinos to open in October 1991. All of the others have closed. This year Dostal will celebrate 30 years in the business!!
The development and creation of Dostal Alley Casino has truly been a unique and historical journey through time. It all began in 1958 when Phillip and Ruth Schmalz opened the doors as a Rock Shop, selling exquisite jewelry and priceless gems and gold nuggets. The Rock Shop was later run by their son and daughter in law Bruce and Sandy Schmalz starting April 1972 with the addition of the T-Shirt Corner store opening up in 1987. Bruce became intricately involved with the process of getting legalized gambling in Colorado and celebrated when the residents of the state voted in gaming in November of 1990. The family affair began as Bruce and Sandy, along with their son and three daughters started Dostal Alley Saloon & Gambling Emporium! In keeping with the spirit of adding gaming to the historic town, Bruce and Sandy kept the Rock Shop and T-Shirt Corner open while adding 44 machines downstairs in the basement of the two buildings. Dostal Alley Casino was officially established in 1991 as one of the first casinos in Colorado. In 1997, after years of operating both businesses, the Schmalz family decided to focus solely on the Casino as the Rock Shop and T-Shirt Corner became what is currently the upstairs bar and brewery.
